Solitude and Semaphore
Step 4. Spell a word using semaphore
-
Go back to step 2 and choose two or three words that mean something to you
-
spell them out with your new semaphore alphabet
Step 5. Make a film
-
Take a short film of yourself spelling out one of your words or questions.
-
In this film your arms can flow between each semaphore letter.
-
You may choose to spell the words without flags if you like.
Check out our examples below.
Step 1. Make a flag
Look around you at the materials you have available and think about what your flag could look like. Things to consider:
-
Colour this could reflect your mood at the moment e.g red for anger or blue for chilled out
-
What are some key features that make you unique and how could you portray them in your personal flag?
-
Materials - will you use an old t-shirt, a crisp packet, paper, leaves
-
Textures - think about the things that are giving you comfort or inspiration
-
weight, size, height.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, we (Next Gen. Creatives) have designed a project: Solitude & Semaphore, to express how we were feeling, communicating & creating during isolation in lockdown.
We have designed a ‘How To’ guide to illustrate the four phases of this creative process.
You can use this guide to create your own work in response. To have your work featured in our online gallery email nextgen@leicester.ac.uk
