Through Different Eyes

Following the Attenborough Arts Centre exhibition ‘In Which Language Do We Dream’ which showcased work by Rich Wiles and Tuba al-Hindawi, I was tasked with working with the Next Gen. Creatives group on a photography project that began as a response to the approaches in the exhibition. I was keen to remove myself as the “expert” in the sessions, choosing to introduce the group to different photographic approaches, techniques and practitioners and allowing them to find their own way to build a small self directed project, rather than me simply dictating the path that each person should take.

Whether choosing to use professional equipment, analogue processes or even smart phones the group have managed to produce a varied and thoughtful series of images, using photography as a means to investigate either themselves, their immediate environments or an aspect of their lives they felt that they wanted to capture in their work.

I hope you enjoy viewing their efforts.

The photos were taken on 3 to 4 different deliveries with Amazon Flex (3 hour slots each), we usually don't see the people who deliver our parcels and due to this have a disconnect to the journeys they take to get to us.

When it comes to the equipment most of the objects such as the face masks and hand sanitisers were given out during COVID, the only permanent piece is the Amazon jacket.

The main rule I followed was no information explicitly relating to houses and car licence plates, with this in mind I hope that you can see the journeys some can only glance at.

(These photos were taken within the East Midlands from the month around June/July 2022).

‘Part 1- Mundanity + Life Lanes’

I was inspired to produce a Zine Mockup about cycling lane signage and how each example is unique whilst holding the same meaning.

I wanted to create a self portrait through the use of objects that hold significance in my life. At this stage in my life I am really interested in art, especially painting and I chose to use objects that reflect this to create my portrait without actually having my physical self in the image.

‘You Cannot See’

My brother has autism but if you see him you would not think he has disability.  The first picture was taken when he was 2 years old, when we did not know he had autism.  He was diagnosed with autism last year but he has been at a special needs school since he was 4 years old.

‘Fragments of Femininity’

A deconstruction of the objects that anchor our image of femininity and an exploration of the effects they can have on self-image.
